Much like the creation of the fact-checking nearly a century ago, journalistic translation is a contemporary innovation in journalism. As local news is replaced by international and social media outlets, news organizations and nonprofits alike are seeking to better coordinate news in order to provide consistent multilingual coverage of a story.
For installations of the work in Italy, wireframe-like Italian translations of the TIME advertisements are made available to visitors. I worked with journalist and English-to-Italian intercultural communicator Liliana Cardile who made translation decisions in the same manner as contemporary news.
To retell a story through a different language requires more than a word-for-word exchange: accuracy requires editorialization. Indeed over the course of the installation, bilingual audience members noted discrepencies, loss of wordplay, and oversimplification in the Italian translations.
